After a public comment period that came out 3-to-1 opposed to having the bear hunt, Governer Chris Christie of New Jersey ordered the first bear hunt in 5 years to commence anyway. On the first day of the hunt (Monday), a staggering, record breaking 264 bears were murdered. With only one day left in the hunt, the Animal Protection League of New Jersey and the Bear Education and Resource Group have appealed to the government to stop killing bears. Activists are currently rallying at Whittingham Wildlife Management Area to voice their dissent against the unreasonable wildlife policy which is more akin to trophy hunting than apt management.
