Small Victory Against Mountaintop Removal

The day after the Appalachia Rising protests drew thousands to the nation’s capitol, sparking civil disobedience from the White House to the Department of the Interior and PNC Bank, the Environmental Protection Agency commissioned Science Advisory Board released a draft review of its research into the impact of Mountaintop Removal (MTR) on water quality. The “valley fills”, where the tops of mountains are dumped after being blown off, contain increased levels of electrical conductivity, which threatens life in surface waters. This information will prove crucial for regulation of the heinous crimes against the environment being committed by King Coal at the cost of the mountains.
